Security Education Foundation

The Chapter Scholarship Foundation was organized in 1983 and the Foundation has been awarding scholarships ever since.  The Foundation’s name recently was changed to the National Capital Chapter Security Education Foundation.

The Security Education Foundation organization consists of a Board of Directors and a Board or Trustees.

The scholarship process commences by inviting selected academic institutions in the Metropolitan Washington area to nominate one of their students for a Chapter scholarship at the associate, baccalaureate and graduate levels.  The criteria include a GPA of 3.0 or higher and completion of one year of study toward the degree being pursued.  The Chapter Foundation Board of Directors reviews the applications and makes the decision on whether to award the scholarship.  The Chapter Foundation Board of Directors also selects one of the recipients to receive a matching award from the ASIS Foundation.

All of the applications are processed through the ASIS Foundation and the recipients actually receive checks from the ASIS Foundation, but they will be receiving Chapter scholarships.

There are several scholarships named in honor or memory of Chapter members.

The Chapter Security Education Foundation relies on donations to fund the scholarship program.  Individual, organizational or corporate donations are always appreciated.

Marvin C. Beasley, CPP Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Beasley was a pioneer in physical security within the federal government (e.g., Manhattan Project, Defense Nuclear Agency), and served as Chapter Parliamentarian.  He passed away in 1983 and his son, Michael Beasley (BGen, USAR) set up a scholarship in his memory, which later merged into the Chapter Scholarship Foundation.  This scholarship traditionally is awarded to a student from The George Washington University.

George C. Moore, CPP Scholarship

Mr. Moore is a longtime Chapter member, an ASIS Life Member, a Lifetime CPP, and a former Chapter Scholarship Director.  After a distinguished FBI career, he went to work in 1974 at the Woodbridge campus of the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) as Director, Head and Professor Emeritus of the Administration of Justice Program.  He started the CPP Review Course, which evolved into a similar course currently being run by ASIS International (although a local version continues under the sponsorship of the National Capital Chapter).  The scholarship named after him traditionally is awarded to a student from the Woodbridge campus of NVCC.

James A. Reeder, CPP Scholarship

Mr. Reeder, an ASIS Life Member and a Lifetime CPP, formerly was head of Education & Training in the Industrial Security Directorate at the Defense Logistics Agency.  He established the Defense Industrial Security Institute, and was one of the first members of the ASIS Professional Certification Board (PCB).  At one time, he reviewed all CPP applications.  He most recently served as Chapter Parliamentarian until succumbing to serious health problems.  This named scholarship traditionally has been awarded to a student from Webster University.

James R. Booth, CPP Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Booth had a long background in ASIS and passed away suddenly in June 2000.  He was an individual who best personified volunteerism and civic-minded activities.  In addition to academic excellence, the Chapter Scholarship Foundation members decided that the criteria for award of this scholarship should include significant involvement in volunteer activities.

Dr. Van Dale Holladay, CPP Scholarship

Mr. Holladay’s distinguished career in the security industry spanned 46 years encompassing the armed forces (retired colonel, Military Police Corps, US Army), the academic community (PhD/Professor Emeritus, Administration of Justice/Security Administration Program, Manassas Campus, Northern Virginia Community College), and ASIS (1985 Chairman, Washington DC Chapter and former Scholarship/Security Education Foundation Director).  In 2004, the Chapter’s existing associate-level scholarship designated for a student from NVCC’s Manassas campus was named in his honor for a lifetime of dedicated and exceptional service.
